    Meningitis ACWY Vaccinations Across Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Mansfield

    Meningitis ACWY – what you need to know:

    Meningitis is a serious and potentially fatal infection that causes inflammation of the linings of the brain. It can be caused by either bacterial or viral infections. Transmission is thought to occur due to respiratory droplets or via close physical contact.

    Symptoms can appear suddenly and include the following:

    • headaches,
    • muscle and joint pain,
    • neck pain or stiffness,
    • fever,
    • photo-phobia (sensitivity to bright light),
    • sleepiness, confusion, seizures and loss of consciousness.

    The bacterial infection is also associated with a characteristic purple (purpuric) rash.

    All travellers who are vaccinated against ACWY (or Meningococcal Groups A, C, W135 and Y) will also receive a certificate of vaccination. Hajj and Umrah pilgrims are required to show certification of vaccination on arrival in Saudi Arabia.

    Where are the risk areas?

    Meningitis occurs worldwide, but particularly in the “Meningitis Belt” of sub-Saharan Africa.

    How old to you have to be to have the Meningitis ACWY vaccine?

    Can be given to those aged 6 weeks and above.

    How long does immunity last for?

    As there are many different strains of Meningitis, it is currently not possible to be vaccination against them all. However, the vaccines that we provide offer the best protection that is presently available.

    Multiple doses are recommended for young children.

    Immunity for Meningitis ACWY protects against four subtypes of meningococcal (A, C, W and Y). Its effects last from 3 to 5 years.
